Alice In Wonderland
About a week ago, I had caught Tim Burton’s rendition of Alice In Wonderland in Disney 3D. I don’t know what the difference but 3D doesn’t seem so cool if you don’t shoot it in stereo like Kirk Cameron did Avatar.
Did you know that it was rated PG? I didn’t. There’s some hacking and slashing at the end plus that hooka smoking caterpillar that make it seem less children-y and more teenage-ish. Except that the Alice story has been in the public domain for a long time now that there are plenty of dark interpretations of it. Let’s just say bringing really young kids to it can set a parent up for some seat squirming.
Or it could set them up for boring. Alice in Wonderland relies on Tim Burton’s hoary tricks at ghoulishness and on Johnny Depp’s weirdness. I couldn’t get past either and wish that the film ended sooner than it did.
But it didn’t end soon enough for me. And I blame Disney. They’ve churned out nothing but rehashes of their intellectual properties. I wish someone would make a better Alice tale rather than the sad suits of Disney.
2 of 5 stars.

first of all skipped the 3-D version (and deeply sympathetic for people looking into buying a new 3-D television.) it's a FAD people and an assault to the senses.
being a huge Tim burton/Johnny Depp fan, i was bored out of my mind in this film. (only slightly less bored than when I saw Coraline in 3D)
Helena Bonham Carter was worthwhile even without a big head. But the whole thing was like a bad take on the Wizard of Oz. maybe I'm the only person that concluded this. The people at the party reminding Alice of her Wonderland friends. cmon now.
Even the Jabberwocky story was underplayed. I love that poem.
It's like they tried to make sense of the most intentionally nonsensical story ever written.
Maybe Disney did have something to do with it. But cmon Tim Burton's been with Disney for a while. Maybe this was his so so exception.
but i do have to say that my 10 year old nieces (having been introduced to all things Burton) loved it. So maybe I missed the point. But I will definitely keep watching.
I just researched that Alice came first and influenced all of these other works like Peter Pan, the Wizard of Oz and Coraline.
so I guess I shouldn't be so hard on Tim Burton for holding true to the story. That seen it before feeling is because it's influenced so many other stories.
Ok so now I get it.
3D is kind of stupid. I think its a waste of my money.
You didn't like Coraline. I liked it a lot (was rooting for an unlikely Oscar).
