The Invite

The Invite is a comedy feels like one of those indy movies from years ago — back when we had a great film industry. It was directed by one of the leads, Olivia Wilde, and features intimate performances by some decent actors. And also another cringe hilarious performance from Seth Rogan. I went in not expecting anything and hoping for a good time, and I came out satisfied.

The plot revolves around a couple who have recently sent their daughter to college. They are left at home and invite their neighbors for dinner. The beleaguered husband, Rogan, wasn’t really wanting to host a dinner, and Wilde was over eager. She felt that they needed it as a couple, and when during the dinner it got toasty, then their marriage felt like it was over. I can’t do it justice because it was very subtle in its humor, but I got it. It was cringey for a bit.

I think it was fine and worth a visit to the theater.

3 of 5 stars.
