Golden Fail

The Golden Globes is a joke. I'm looking at the nominees for last nights program and I shake my head trying to understand any of it.For example, the best Drama pictures are: Avatar, The Hurt Locker, Inglorious Basterds, Precious based on the Novel Push by Sapphire, and Up in the Air. The winner, Avatar, was no more dramatic than Aliens, and some may even call it an action flick. When you divide pictures arbitrarily into Drama and Comedy/Musical, you start pigeonholing films into categories that make no sense! And why are musicals still around? There's only one or two non-animated musicals made a year. That shouldn't be enough to earn them a part of one category. Here's another example of a headscratcher coming from the Golden Globes: Robert Downey Jr won for best actor in a comedy/musical for his hilarious portrayal of that truly funny guy, Sherlock Holmes. What you didn't LOL all through that film? Jokes on you then. Sherlock Holmes was as much an actioner as Avatar, but didn't qualify for Drama the way Avatar did! Hunh? The Golden Globes also lump in television into their awards. Now, there's nothing wrong with TV, but throwing it into the mix is like comparing apples to oranges. The star wattage between the two is megawatts in difference. Funny that.There. The rant is done. Perhaps fueled by Avatar's win. But then I look at the films and realize I don't think anything about them. Weird. Who knows what the Oscar race is going to be like?

  1. The whole internet imploded when Avatar won. Heh.

I actually didn't mind Avatar winning. Just like I didn't mind Forest Gump and Titanic winning. What is best picture anyways? I think the film is a technical marvel that is well structured. I mean it's quite an achievement in filmmaking. I don't know, it didn't bother me. I'd rather that Wild Things won for it's interesting take on a children's films, but whatevs. Avatar was a big movie that was well told, granted with some cheese, but it mainly was a huge step in filmmaking. So I don't mind it being rewarded for the effort it took to make that film.

Hurt Locker is good, but it's pretty much like all war films of late. Up In The Air was well made, but it wasn't monumental or life changing. Didn't see Precious, but I have a feeling it's really good.

Inglorious is the only nominee I wouldn't have mind winning, cause that was a fun ass film. It had style. Just like Avatar it was the joy of cinema. Best Picture is hard thing to really pinpoint.

But the Golden Globes are odd. It's not really nominated by people that really matter. So I usually don't care who wins Globes.

The only times I ever was really upset was the year of Chicago and Shakespeare in Love.

  2. The whole internet liked Avatar, but don't believe it to be the best drama. Except for those fanboys who think DarkKnight was the best film of last year. O!

Anyway, what's weird is that you really didn't hear anything about best pictures this past year. Not one bit. Hurt Locker? maybe but not touted for being the best. Up In the Air? Ditto.

The globes are just ridiculous. Look at that Downey Jr win. The heck is that category.

This'll make everything more difficult for the Oscars.

  3. No way the whole internet liked Avatar. Every geek site is freaking out that Basterds lost. Even people that liked Avatar. Pages are devoted to geeks just freaking out. The general public could care less, but the geek sites all imploded. It's funny.

Yeah. But the Globes are silly, but so are the Oscars. I think the Sag, DGA and other small awards are better barometers from peers. But in general, it all really doesn't matter. Time is all that matters with film.

  4. only the Academy counts and i think it's the most important. Avatar will not win the oscar for making billions of dollars. at least it shouldn't.

  5. I sensed that the fanboys of the internet loved Avatar, but also know its flaws. I can understand why they would want Basterds over Avatar. For all its cool effects, the story does seem so simple.

The Oscars are the only legit ones in the eyes of the general public.

What I'm surprised about is the fact that the movies this past year kind of weren't awe inspiring. I'm sure there are a few, but I didn't see them.

    Maybe sometime…
