Link of the Day [3.15.12]

Is that how the show began? I knew that Jeff was after Britta, but didn't know that the Study Group started as a means to get with her. I started watching at the episode wherein they show Annie enrolled in Greendale to follow Troy.Anyhow, Community is back tonight. You can bet that I'll be there. Or at least time shifted on my DVR or downloaded tomorrow from iTunes or watching next week on Hulu. http://www.slate.com/blogs/browbeat/2012/03/15/britta_on_community_why_the_gillian_jacobs

Three French Hens

The Northern Exposure episode Seoul Mates is what made me embark on this foolish blog journey in the first place. If I didn’t read about it on the AV Club, I wouldn’t have tried this out.

This episode of one of my favorite television shows occurs in its third season, the peak of its story telling prowess. The main story involves Maurice finding out about his son born of the hostess he had a fling with during the Korean war. The second story is about Joel, the Jewish doctor, embracing his inner Christian. The third story has Maggie all clumsy because of her imminent homecoming with her parents. The fourth is about Holling freaking out about Shelley missing out on her Catholic Mass. All this in the middle of Christmas as the Raven comes along.

Ravens are what decorates the trees in the town of Cicely for Christmas. They are the Native American spirit of the holiday times. The Raven brought the light to the darkness. “A long time ago the Raven looked down from the sky and saw that the people of the world were living in darkness.”

The Christmas theme is community. Northern Exposure was always about community a place where you belong and where your quirks don’t bother anyone. You’ll always find community in Christmastime. Everyone sharing the same good cheer and good will towards all. It’s what brings us together.

I still haven’t taken up the task to watch the whole Northern Exposure run. I can’t wait to do that one.

Link of the Day [11.15.11]

One thing about the internet, it brings you closer to strangers while still being a stranger. I often like looking at creative people’s blogs. It makes for interesting reads at how they do what they do. When do they find the time to blog?

For respect of Community and to acknowledge that being put on the back may mean cancellation, here’s Dan Harmon’s tumblr. Maybe sometime this week he’ll tell us how he feels about that.

Morning Tense

Watching The Gunfighter on AMC. It’s pretty tense. Jimmy Ringo, a notorious gunslinger rides into Cheyenne to woo his girl back. Everyone is gunning for him: the three brothers of the last idiot who went up against him, the local tough guy, the loafers at the bar, the kids hooking school. Everyone is except the girl he wants back. Soon, they’ll all cross paths.

The movie is pretty well written as expressed by getting an Oscar nomination. Sometimes its witty banter. And other times its the tension building.

I’m actually enthralled.

Link of the Day [1.29.11]

Yeah. She’s pretty, and she’s pretty strong. You are watching Ice Road Truckers, right? I think this is the third link that she’s starred in. She’s getting to be ranked up there with the capo di touti capo, Nozomi Sasaki.

Saturday Night Dead

Television needs to bring back the Saturday night creep show. These were usually found on the local, independent, UHF stations. Ours in B’more was called Ghost Host Theatre hosted by the Ghost Host. You stayed up late on the weekends and either watched Saturday Night Live or the Ghost Host. I think I preferred the Ghost Host more with its terrible creepy movies, it’s B level monsters, and its very cheesy effects. I would watch it, but fall asleep an hour into the movie leaving the television on until it turned over with the Star Spangled Banner then the static. I couldn’t stand leaving the television on until the static, it was creepy before Poltergeist and even more so afterwards.

Then when I grew older, my late Saturday night viewings were The Dark Side and Friday the 13th, The series. BTW, Friday the 13th, The Series has been reborn on ScyFy channel as Warehouse 13.

Tweet Blogging

Because not every one is on twitter…

I’m watching Twister and wondering how many named actors can be thrown in this flick.

Jan De Bont, you magnificent bastard, I read your book!

It’s not TV…

..it’s great shows I’ve not seen.

Weird. I used to love watching television. I’m too busy surfing the net to be bothered with following a show. I’m also downloading anime which I seem to like better than the boobtube.

Here’s a list of shows that are highly acclaimed that I have not watched. Even though they’re available on DVD. I don’t really care to catch up. My loss.

The Sopranos
Mad Men
Sex and the City
Curb Your Enthusiasm
The Larry Sanders Show
Deadwood
The Corner
The Wire

Probably more to this, but I can’t think of them. Anyone want to throw out a show?
