What’s on Page 123?

Found on Crooked Tmber. And because I haven’t posted in a while. Let me do this meme. You can too.

Instructions:
1. Grab the nearest book (that is at least 123 pages long).
2. Open to p. 123.
3. Go down to the 5th sentence.
4. Type in the following 3 sentences.
5. Tag five people.

What books do I have on hand? The absolute nearest to me is The Saga of the Icelanders by some really old Icelanders, I guess. Page 123 is in the middle of Egil’s Saga.

“Then he spoke a verse:

I could not stand the ugly
land-claimer’s wrath;
no cuckoo will alight knowing
that the squawking eagle prowls.
There, as before, I benefited
from the bear of the hearth-seat.
No one need give up who boasts
such a loyal helper on his travels.”

That’s more than 3 sentences, but it I can’t really tell what 3 sentences are when most of it is in verse. Yikes! Those darn sagas.

Your turn whomever you are.

Colnel Mustard in the Library

It’s gonna be the biggest thing this summer. No, not any of the lame third editions of movies, but Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallow. It’s gonna be big. Real big. And you’ll just have to go along with the hype.

To get you started, here’s some fancy speculation about some plot points for the finale.

It’s ludicrous, but somewhat believable. Yet, most everything you can say about the Potter series can come true. I’ve been known to dabble. In fact, I think that it will be Harry who dies with Hermione very saddened.

Audio book of Sarah Vowell’s Assassination Vacation

The Daily Show’s blog on Live Journal discusses the audio book version of Sarah Vowell’s Assassination Vacation. The post discusses Jon Stewart’s involvement with the audio version. He plays President Garfield. And very funny at that. His was the funniest part of the entire audio book. I found the book to be funny, but every time Jon Stewart read a line I was cracking up. Now, I listened to it in the car stuck in traffic, and it must have been a site to see: me laughing with tears in my eyes alone in the car banging the steering wheel with glee. You should try to catch Sarah Vowell’s appearance on the Daily Show when she was shilling her book. I have it tivoed if you need it.(I think I have blogged about this already.)

Books of May 2005

Besides finishing up The Shadow of the Wind, I read completely The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman. This was the first book in his Dark Materials trilogy. Do I feel like reading the next two? Yes, but I don’t want to do it just this month. No, and it wouldn’t be a tragedy not finishing the trilogy. The book was alright, but it was not as compelling a fantasy realm as other places I have read about. I may finish the trilogy sometime later.

Books read in February

Zero. Technically, I am still reading a book so I would say 1/4. My quest to read 3 books a month is failing spectacularly. I did not finish the 1/2 a book needed for January, and missed out on 2 and 3/4 for February. At this rate, March will be just the opening sentence of a book. Pathetic. Although, I am somewhat keeping up with my reading my textbooks.

I am a quarter of the way through The Best American Travel Writing 2004. ed. Pico Iyer.
