Link of the Day [2.17.10]

I haven’t seen a blog-a-thon n a while. They were all the rage a few years back. It’s when a bunch of bloggers decide to blog upon a subject for a few days. They write a blog post addressing the topic at hand, submit it to the blog-a-thon co-ordinator, and then read and comment upon all the links available. It stirs up a sense of community in the blog-o-sphere.

Today’s link is to a blog-a-thon about film preservation. Lot’s of interesting links to ponder about the loss of some of Hollywood’s past. It is also about treasuring and helping to preserve what little is out there.

I love sushi. What do you do when you find out that it’s not environmentally friendly of a meal? When you can get sushi at the Royal Farms store, we have overfished the oceans. When you find out that tuna has high concentrations of mercury, we have poisoned our food supplies. What is a sushi lover to do?

Perhaps, change his habits? I would like to, but, damn, unagi is in the “eco-worst” column. What can replace that?

This is not my beautiful house

This is a good article on the problems with living in Owings Mills. It starts with the mall and with its steep decline into shopping irrelevancy so does the place as a place to live. The author gives a good detailed discussion about the metro problems and its disjointed place in this place.

They are starting to build the bridge next to me, and the field across the street has been laid bare. I wonder how things are going to look around here in a year or two. And can I ride my bike anymore?

Link of the Day [8.13.08]

I have two bikes that I’ve been riding this year. I also have two more bikes in the garage. What to do with these? I would like to sell one, the Bianchi, but the other, an old Specialized Rockhopper, I want to recycle. Fix it up and give it to someone who may make use of it better.

I don’t who would do that, but these guys are close. If you have a few bikes you want to get rid of consider donating to this organization. Now if they only picked up door to door.

With the proliferation of electronic devices, you may not know what to do with old, infrequently used components. It’s best to recycle them, but it’s tough to get to the dump to do so. Best Buy announced that they are doing electronics recycling at their stores. And there’s always a Best Buy around (there’s one down the road from me). You bring them your old computers, televisions and appliances and they will recycle it for you. It may cost a fee though, but it’s worth it for not having that junk clutter your house and clutter the dump.

Cycle Lift

Sometimes on my bike I wish I had this cycle lift to help me up hills. That’s fucking cool. Of course you find these in a city in Europe. Us Americans don’t need that. We have cars.

Green Day

Earth day was this past weekend. Here’s a link to a Nova episode about solar energy.

I’ve always wanted to build a house that would give energy back to the grid so that my energy costs would be cheap. That’s a while off. I would build it with solar powers. And perhaps some kind of battery storage. Operate more efficiently with a small carbon footprint.
