iPhone ruined everything

I just bought a PSP to play my Macross Ace Frontier. Shopping for gifts, I think I’m actually on my own gift list.

Starting it up I had to configure it for the first time. I need to set the date. I need to set the time and time zone. I need to choose a user name. All this is done using the controls of the device. When it came time to enter a name, I was trying to type on the screen! WTF! There’s no touchscreen on this thing! For the price, that sucks.

Anywhoo, it’s one of the worst experiences trying to use the built in web browser with only a control pad. URL entry is torture. I suggest you give the prisoners in Gutanamo free internet access, but the PSP as their input method. They will confess to killing JFK just for want of a normal user experience.

Thank the kami-sama for iPhone for soon every handheld device will adopt the touch screen.

They walk

I’m all psyched to play my imported PSP game, Macross Ace Frontier, but I don’t have a PSP. So I stop by Best Buy.

So very, very close to purchasing one, but decided against it. I had the box in hand comparing which one I should buy. Madden ’09? Gods of War? Plain black for $30 less? Ratchet & Clank? Why?

In the end, like Robert Deniro in Heat, I walked. Thirty seconds. Gone.

Turns out it was smart decision. Today was the quiet release of an updated PSP: the PSP 3000. You can get it in that Ratchet & Clank bundle. I’ll just wait for the non-bundled one next month. Meanwhile, I’m brushing up on my kanji.

Quote of the Day [10.03.08]

Oboete imasu ka me to me ga atta toki wo
Oboete imasu ka te to te ga fureatta toki
Sore wa hajimete no ai no tabidachi deshita
I LOVE YOU SO

( Do you remember? The time when our eyes first met?
Do you remember? The time when our hands first touched?
That was the very first time I set out on the journey of love.
I love you so. )

“Dave, if by some incredible miracle Bill does come back, don’t tell him I put his coffee mug in my pants.”

Link of the Day [9.09.08]

That’s one crazy link, hunh? I know that it is better web etiquette to put an actual descriptive phrase for the link enclosed in those anchor tags, but I’m just continuing on with the grand tradition of the raw URL, because it’s the way it looks if I post via email. Keep it the same for both web-based or email-based posts and you don’t have to worry about the format. You do have to worry about the length of the line, because iPhone wraps it weird;.

Anywhoo, today’s link is to OtakuUSA magazine’s article on “Gateway Anime.” That’s anime that leads you to becoming a life long fan. It’s similar to how cigarettes or pot can lead you to harder drugs like crystal meth or special K. I know my gateway anime is Robotech. I did watch a few episodes of StarBlazers, but it was usually on crappy UHF and hard to get good reception, so it was tough to watch. And I did love watching Speed Racer and Kimba, the White Lion, but being so young at the time, I didn’t think about them being “Japanese Animation.” They were just some cartoon.

Robotech was different. You couldn’t wait for it to come on, so you’d hurry home to watch it or set the VCR to tape it. Then you’d watch it over and over. And not too long afterwards, you buy your first Valkyrie fighter. And it was cool. Next came the models. And finally, you’d get that first crush on a 2D girl. Oh, Lisa Hayes (Misa Hiyase in the original Macross), forget that lame Rick Hunter…

Hunh? Where was I?

Oh, yeah, Robotech was my gateway anime that started me down the anime fandom road. Not to mention School Rumble.

I sing the praises of Macross Frontier, and for those who have watched it, it’s good, right? Yet, I wouldn’t have even cared for it, if not for watching Robotech, the US derivation/adaptation of Macross, Mospaeda, and Southern Cross anime.

You can get Robotech via iTunes, now. In a perfect world, we would also be able to get the original Macross and Macross Frontier as well. When are we going to break down those country ID barriers? Steve Jobs tear down that wall!!!

Anime question of the day [8.27.08]

Who needs a remake of Robotech when we have Macross Frontier to watch?

Just release it in the US already. Quit with the lawsuits and give us our US blue ray discs of Frontier. I’ll also buy the original Macross.

Say “vwat” if you want to unpimp your Mac

Yesterday, the Apple world was atwitter (not to mention WallStreet) with the release of BootCamp, the dual boot utility that will let you load Windows XP onto an Intel Mac. As you know, I am an Apple enthusiast. This is good news. Maybe I will have an audience for my software.

Why is it good for Apple? They are a hardware vendor. More people buy Macs the more they profit. Apple is hoping for spill over affect. Come for the XP stay for the OS X. Also, games. Want Apple games? Here’s XP. Suckas!

Anyhow, I really can spout off on this but it’s best to let the Apple pundits take care of the brilliance of this move.

Update:
Here’s some more good info on whether to buy Apple stock. It seems that Apple is going to go big this summer. Continuing on the XP as the “New Classic” here and here.
