Mangaka

I’m gonna link a scanlation. It’s to Cross Game by Adachi Mitsuru. It’s one of the finest manga out there now. Mitsuru-sensei is the Japanese film director, Ozu, as a mangaka. Not in theme, but in the ability to establish atmosphere. He loves to extend time panel by panel.

Umm. You should be reading this.

“Gee, and here I am mistaking the Museum of Yarn for the Guggenheim.”

"Go to DMC! Go to DMC!"That would be the crowd chant for Detroit Metal City fans as it is translated into English.Who is Detroit Metal City? You've got to read the manga to find out, but be forewarned, it's pretty offensive. And hilarious. And cruddily drawn, but don't let that stop you from asking me to borrow it. You'll be laughing your ass off and wondering what will Soichi do.The story is about Soichi a college grad who is the lead singer for Detroit Metal City, a death metal band. DMC is a mixture of Kiss and Gwar. They are a up and coming band. Good for them, but bad for Soichi who just wants to write sugary sweet bubblegum pop music. As the lead singer for DMC, Krauser II, Soichi is bad. As himself, he's good, but in reality, which role is the real Soichi. He comes so naturally to the Krauser role that his sweet normal self is almost a sham. He likes to become Krauser to express his more aggressive self. There are also fun aspects to the book. DMC's manager is a woman who loves to talk about how much DMC's awesomeness makes her wet. Soichi's band mates are also as bland as he is when they too aren't dressed up. And there's the love interest who thinks Soichi is a sweet guy, but he wants to do things, bad things, to her as Krauser.

Yakyuu on the mind

It’s a Sunday. It’s a day game. It’s the finale of a series. It’s a loss. With the home team, Orioles, continuing their less than mediocre ways, it’s time to look in to the game around as its played in Japan.

Here’s the NY Times writing about the
atmosphere in the stadiums of Japan. Very much different than the quiet of Camden Yards. If we could only get as rowdy, we wouldn’t have to worry too much about the awful Red Sox fans who visit our lovely park.

Then there is the adopted team of BrowserMetrics, the Hiroshima Toyou Carp. They’re playing better than the O’s but not much better. They too are below .500 in winning, but the distance to respectability is shorter for them than for the hapless O’s. Plus they’ve got a new stadium, Mazda Zoom-Zoom Park.

Finally, about some manga and anime. Mitsura Adachi’s Cross Game is an amazing manga. The anime only slightly less. We’re going to the Koshien! Taishou Yakyuu Musume is just starting up. I’m not sure I like it, but it’s got baseball, anime girls, sailor uniforms, and kimonos. It’s got the game.

Tsundere Goodness

Kei-chan bringing the tsundere

Grade S on the zettai ryouki scale: grade A thigh high stockings, twin tails, tsundere goodness. Kei-chan!

Good sixth episode for Hatsukoi Limited. The mangaka, Kawashita-sensei, previously did Ichigo 100%. Whereas Ichigo 100% focuses on harem style, love triangle fun, Hatsukoi Limited focuses on love dodecahdron style. Every girl likes some guy who likes some other girl who likes another guy. It’s a nice short read in manga about 4 volumes or so. The anime is faithful to the story because it is so compact. The animation is faithful to Kawashita-sensei’s style. In fact, I think Kei Enomoto is drawn better in the anime. Yet, Kawashita-sensei still rulez with her trademark curvy girls.

Link of the Day [4.09.09]

Kawashita-sensei of “Ichigo 100%” infamy had written another manga with cute girls, “Hatsukoi Limited.” It’s being made into an anime. Next to Mazukazo of “I”s” fame, she draws wonderfully cute girls. But her boys are a bunch of dolts. Anywhoo, when the anime comes out, I guess I’ll be trying to see if it’s any good. You can always go and read the manga at some scanlation site.

Link of the Day [3.27.09]

Rereading the seven volumes of Strawberry 100% (Ichigo 100%) in anticipation for next one supposedly due in April. I read at least two chapters a day, and I don’t get more than a few panels before Junpei does something stupid at which I’m screaming at him. Or he doesn’t make a move at which I’m groaning about the whole enterprise. Just stupidity on his part.

I’ve peeked at the ending and read the wikipedia entry so I know who he’s ends up with. That’s eleven volumes away though, but I can’t help but wonder WTF is up with this guy.

All three girls dig him. And the other girls in the book dig him too. WTF just pick one of these girls. You know which one. But they are all so cute. Satsuki? She really, really, really likes you. Aya? She’s too shy to express her feelings. Yui? Isn’t she like your a little sister to you? Tsukasa? She’s not your girlfriend no longer.

YARRGH! You make me crazy, Junpei.
