The god of thunder takes the win

Thor Hushovd of Cervelo Test Team wins a rain soaked sixth stage. Is this a tour or what? And is the the Tour de France or Espagne? Or Cataluna? They went from Girona to Barcelona neither of which is in France.

David Millar of Garmin-Slipstream tried to repeat the breakaway success like yesterday, but gets swept up in the last kilometer. It’s cruel, but that’s the chance you take. Millar is someone to root for as he was once suspended for doping infractions, but has been riding clean with the Slipstream team. He almost had it today, but the sprinters’ teams are not going let another stage slip away.

Back to Thor. He’s a monster of a rider, bigger and bulkier than any in the peloton. He is a former winner of the Green Jersey (sprinter’s jersey). So he’s got speed. And yet, he can’t win against Columbia-HTC’s Manx Missile, Mark Cavendish. But today was the day. This stage finished up a hill, which, because of his power meant that it was a good finish for Thor. And it was!

I’m liking that this blog is turning out to be a sports blog! One day O’s another day Le Tour. The O’s suck, and Le Tour is only in July, so bear with me for the next couple of weeks.

I’ve been tivoing Le Tour to watch the live stuff rather than watching it at night. I like the Brits rather than the Americans doing the play-by-play although Phil Liggett is starting to get senile. Yesterday, my tivo didn’t record the post stage awards. I missed the podium girls! I like the podium girls! Bring me the podium girls! I especially like the navy-white for the stage winner. Mmm. The polka-dots are cool too. Yellow, not so much.

More Old School Than New

If you love movies, then I’m sure you love TCM. It’s celebrating its 15th Anniversary this month. They got normal folk as guest programmers to do some of their own favorites this month. I just saw some of “Gone With The Wind” and “Double Indemnity” is coming on tonight. Woohoo. Tivo asplode!

Quote of the Day [10.08.08]

“One of the few good things about modern times: If you die horribly on television, you will not have died in vain. You will have entertained us.”

Kurt Vonnegut

“Well, these may not be those, but that is not too shabby. “

When NewsRadio Quote Month started, the DVD for the show hadn’t been released. I had to scour the interwebs for NewsRadio quotes. Fast forward a few years later, and you can get the entire five seasons on DVD. Thank you megacorp.

When you finally watch them you see the brilliance of the show. I will be happy to put NewsRadio up against any other sitcom ever produced as the greatest comedy. Evah. It starts strong from the pilot episode through the death of Bill McNeal (Phil Hartman), and although uneven and lacking the finer wit of the previous four, it’s fifth season grows and grows on you.

Here’s a fan writing for The Onion’s AV Club wherein she watches the first two seasons on DVD in the first box set. All her synopsis of those episodes are a great reads and brings back fond memories of each show. It’s also a font of NewsRadio quotes that I haven’t used yet. Heh. Heh.

Where’s my discs?

Quote of the Day [9.06.08]

“In 1972, a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn’t commit. They promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Los Angeles underground. Today, still wanted by the government, they survive as soldiers of fortune.

If you have a problem, if no-one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire the A-Team.”

Opening monologue to the 80s action show, “The A-Team”

Growing up in the 80s, you could not not have watched MacGyver. He made
a bomb out of chewing gum and a radiator hose! At least that was the
joke at the time. Some of his solutions were ingenious. Others were
hard to believe, but they all contained some truth to the science in
them.Today's site is a contains wealth of MacGyver information, and I'm
sending you to the list of MacGyver solutions. You should also read the
rest of the site to satisfy all your MacGyver interest. The very least
is to check out the entry for the characters Murdoc and Penny Parker.
They were in one of my favorite episodes.http://www.macgyveronline.org/pages/macgyverisms.html

Sappy

Avoid the Olympics on NBC. They suck. And it’s all about the people story. What about the sports? Who won the archery? The judo? The women’s weightlifting? Who knows if your watching NBC. You’ll learn more about the adversities of the atheletes than about their sport or their competitors.

Captured on screen

Here’s the Big Picture’s take on the 2008 Olympic Opening Ceremonies. I missed the opening part with the drumming, the dancing and the children singing. I watched the parade of countries and that silly space walk for the Olympic flame. I just wanted to see the fireworks. For the country that invented them, it looked spectacular.
