“Good work, Dave. It takes a real man to crumble under pressure so fast.”

Let’s start of 2017’s NewsRadio Quote Month with a rocker.

BabyMetal death!

If there must only be one Nakamoto sister, I prefer Himetan and her lovely beam (ひめたんベーム!). But that won’t be possible come her graduation. So we’ll have to have the imouto, SUMetal. I believe she’s got a voice and poise better than Techi from Keyaki-chans. She would give her a run for the money.

So. The fox god will guide us well this month.

Bookstore Haul II: Volume3 — The Fox God

The Fox God has smiled on me today. I found the Funko pop for Su-Metal at my local bookstore. She now joins Moa-Metal and Yui-Metal on my mantle. I’ve had the other 2 since the end of 2015, and I have been on the lookout for the lead singer of BabyMetal since then. It’s taken me a year but she finally popped up. Unsurprisingly, I there were more Moa-Metal and Yui-Metal figures there. I was almost gonna give up, but checked around the store once more and found her, staring me in the face. The Fox God is good.

On another note, Su-Metal is Nakamoto Suzuka. Her sister, Nakamoto Himeka (Himetan), is an idol in my favorite thing, Nogizaka46, and it was just announced that she will go on hiatus because of unspecified health reasons for the latest 17th single. I am more of a fan of Himetan because I am more of a fan of Nogizaka46. It will not be the same without her lovely and energetic Himetan Beam. The 5th Year Birthday Live is going to be a tad bit sadder. I am hoping she has a speedy recovery so that she can continue to deliver her Himetan Beam.

Slaying at the Center

Holy! Let me tell you the godliness going on here. First, the song is Keyakizaki46 breakout first single, “Silent Majority.” Everyone and their oji-san loves it. Second, it looks like the Kami-7 of AKB48 plus a few of their senbatsu sousekyou members. Third, Nogizak46 and their most popular members. Fourth, Keyaki-chan represented by their most popular members as well. And finally, Ikoma Rina from Nogizaka46 killing as center.

Now, this makes me believe that anyone can slay at the center of this song.

バレッタ #乃木坂46

Everything about this song fucking rulez!

The intro, the verses, the choruses… ROCKING!

The senbatsu, the hachi-fukujin + 1, the center, the 2nd generation… GREAT CHOICES!

The dance choreograph, the lyrics, the girls, seifuku… NICE!

The covers of the albums… COOL!

I love this song. I can play it on the guitar. I sing it most every day. Play this at my funeral!

年下の男の子

Here’s something really kawaii for your Friday coffee break. No idea what the song is about, but I can’t get enough of the girls doing the singing.

How did I find out about this group, Goose House? Did I get to this video on YouTube from following their OP on the anime, Your Lie in April? Didn’t hear about them from there. Wasn’t watching at the time. Didn’t even know that they also did the ED for season 2 of Silver Spoon.

Perhaps I was searching YouTube for anime covers. But I did find one from other members of their collective.

Anywhoo, it’s kawaii.

(PS. Megane!)

EDIT: Wrong fucking video…

Doll

Been pretty infatuated with this song by Scandal, a Japanese girl band. I just find it fascinating coming from josikosei. Let’s all rock out!

Pacific Rim

Pacific Rim was my most anticipated summer movie. I was so gung-ho for it since catching the teaser trailer last winter. Giant robots versus kaiju? Sign me up. I’m there.

Now it’s in theatres as we speak, but will it live up to the build up?

HELL YEAH!

Pacific Rim is about monsters from space attacking earth. In the beginning, these monster, or kaiju — from the Japanese ‘strange beast‘ — were tough to put down. Yet, earthlings fought back forming a Pan Pacific Defense Corps composed of giant robots, or jeagers — from the German ‘hunters.’ They beat back these monsters, but after awhile the monsters evolve and gain the upper hand. This forces the shutdown of the PPDC and the earthlings to build giant walls to keep the monsters at bay. In a last desperate attempt, the few remaining jaegers are thrown into the Breach to shut down the monster portal. It’s a plot out of an anime!

If you compare Pacific Rim to an anime, you’ll find it wanting. When you have 13-26 episodes (6-12 hours), you can fill it with characterization. You can make your characters, troubled high school kids who also must save the world. With a movie of 2+ hours, you’re left with shallow characterizations summed up in cliché: the father son team, the washed up pilot and the newbie. There’s no characterization, but these labels. The characters are defined by them and they live up to them.

But what you want in a movie with giant mecha and kaiju? Big, loud battles! You get them. And more. If you ever wondered what a Voltron slash would look like, it’s here. If you ever wanted to see the missiles released from giant mecha, it’s here. Pacific Rim lives up to it’s billing in the fights. That’s what we want, it’s what we get. Satisfying.

I won’t let the shallow characters ruin it. After all, for 2 hours with tons of mecha versus kaiju battles, I would rather see that than the characters. Let television and anime have it. Just give me giant robots!

4 of 5 stars.

The Beat

You see that Southern Comfort commercial — the one with the guy getting his hair washed? Did you hear the song? Yeah. It’s the one you’re playing now. It’s called ‘The Beat’ by some guy named Lou Johnson. Sounds familiar? Of course, it’s the sample for De La Soul’s ‘Ring, Ring, Ring.’ Even the middle part. Funky right? Pure and funky!
